Steven Hadley’s new book, Audience Development and Cultural Policy, examines the relationship of audience development to cultural policy and offers a perspective on how the practice of audience development is connected to ideas of democratic access to culture. Providing a detailed overview of arts marketing, audience development and cultural democracy, the book argues that the work of audience development has been profoundly misunderstood by the field of arts management.

Given that the book focuses on the British case, we think it will be interesting to talk about these issues – audience development, democratising access to culture and cultural democracy – with colleagues from other countries and get to know better their practices. As well as have a closer look at a concrete case, that of the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), which in recent times has been a reference in the world of museums and culture in general.
