Sound’s Hidden Journey Under Nordic Waters
Apr

to Apr 20

Sound’s Hidden Journey Under Nordic Waters

Welcome to experience a multidimensional sound art installation by Nordic artists Laila Skovmand (DK), Petri Kuljuntausta (FI) and Jens L. Thomsen (FO).

The exhibition introduces the sensation of sounds travelling four times faster than they do in the air, of being completely surrounded by sound and elevates the feeling of being one with nature in a new sound art installation that includes soundscapes that have never been played to an audience before.

Sound’s Hidden Journey Under Nordic Waters is a pioneering exploration of sounds underwater from an artistic point of view.

The project is created by sound artists Petri Kuljuntausta (Finland), Laila Skovmand (Denmark), and Jens L. Thomsen (Faroe Islands). Together with sound engineer Roma Komar, they have created unique recordings of underwater reverb – from deep caves in the Atlantic to silent fjords in Greenland and the shallow waters of the beautiful lake Saanajärvi (Sánajávri). Each artist offers their own perspective on water – hovering between philosophy and science, myth, ethics, and aesthetics.

Between 13 and 20 April, the sound art exhibition at Suomenlinna explores humanity’s connection to water and raises questions about how we are influenced by our relationship with nature.  Welcome to dive into worlds of sound never before presented to the public!

During the process of creating the recordings, the artists were portrayed by documentary filmmakers Karin Pennanen, Benjamin Hesselholdt and Peter Sørensen. The films can be seen during the exhibition at Suomenlinna.

Free entry. The exhibition will be open on

  • Saturday 13 April 11-15

  • Tuesday 16 April 11-19

  • Wednesday 17 April 11-15

  • Thursday 18 April 11-19

  • Friday 19 April 11-15

  • Saturday 20 April 11-15

The project is produced by Between Music in collaboration with MiklagårdArts Finland, with support from Teledyne RESON.

Dr. Untitled – A Confessional Online Performance

In our experiment, we want to understand how individuals – who are part of the Untitled Alliance – manage to translate the goals and ideals of their daily work into their private life. Do you advocate a basic universal income but don’t know how to deal with your kids’ pocket money? Do you implement national citizens assemblies but cannot decide on the family vacation? Are you a vegan eating meat in your dreams? Do you have occasionally brief moments of feeling like a hypocrite? Then this is the right session for you.

Audience development and cultural policy

Debate
With Steven Hadley, Beth Ponte, Ceyda Berk-Söderblom, Valika Smeulders

Moderated by Acesso Cultura’s Executive Director Maria Vlachou
Livestreamed on Acesso Cultura’s Facebook page
The conversation will take place in English.

Steven Hadley’s new book, Audience Development and Cultural Policy, examines the relationship of audience development to cultural policy and offers a perspective on how the practice of audience development is connected to ideas of democratic access to culture. Providing a detailed overview of arts marketing, audience development and cultural democracy, the book argues that the work of audience development has been profoundly misunderstood by the field of arts management.

Given that the book focuses on the British case, we think it will be interesting to talk about these issues – audience development, democratising access to culture and cultural democracy – with colleagues from other countries and get to know better their practices. As well as have a closer look at a concrete case, that of the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), which in recent times has been a reference in the world of museums and culture in general.

Solidarity is highest form of culture!

#united #globalsolidarity #arts #culture #cooperation #freedom

Dear friends and dear colleagues,

The COVID-19 affects the artistic and cultural field strongly with most festivals, concerts and events cancelled and many cultural centres shut down, which means a massive loss of activities and income for all involved: artists, producers, managers, technicians, etc. Our work - based on meeting with people from abroad and exchange of activities - is at the verge of a complete shut-down.

We all are now faced with a big unknown. We will be challenged to alter our institutionalised thinking, to give up our privileged position and try to see the very same situation from a different perspective.

We want to send a message of courage to everyone involved and affected.

Cultural philosopher Slavoj Zizek, in his article, articulates an alternative perspective for us all to consider and reflect on when reading the COVID-19 situation. Zizek says, “...But maybe another – and much more beneficial – ideological virus will spread and hopefully infect us: the virus of thinking about an alternate society, a society beyond nation-state, a society that actualizes itself in the forms of global solidarity and cooperation...”

We stand with our colleagues all over the world and affirm our total solidarity with the arts and culture sectors!

💚 Let’s remain united to defend our culture, arts and freedom.  💚

Our Artistic Director, Ceyda, will be one of the guest speakers at TALENT BOOST SUMMIT 2019

Turku proudly hosts Talent Boost Summit on 12th November 2019 in Logomo. This year the event’s focus will be on talent retention and how to boost business through international talents.

Ceyda will share her experience in Finland and talk about the role of arts to build dialogue and promote understanding in cultural diversified society.

Companies in Finland have a shortage of experts in many areas, such as IT, cleantech, creative, health, maritime and tech fields. Hiring the first international experts is often a big step for the company. However, the company's culture and know-how develop with the help of international experts. This accelerates growth and success in export markets. For our competitiveness, it is crucial to attract these international professionals.

International experts living in Finland are an important asset to our working life. Many also have talented spouses who also have moved to Finland. Also, annually, more than 3,000 foreign students graduate from Finnish universities. These people have both professional knowledge and experience in Finnish culture and lifestyle in addition to their own language, culture and networks. Their expertise is key for innovation, growth and internationalization of Finnish businesses.

Meeting Theodore Zeldin

Join Theodore Zeldin as he discusses how a new kind of conversation can create a deeper understanding between two people and inspire ambitions for work, for art and for private life.

The discussion will be held in English.

Theodore Zeldin CBE is an Oxford University historian, philosopher and author. He has been a pioneer in revealing how relationships and emotions such as love, fear, loneliness, friendship and ambition have evolved in different civilisations over the centuries, and most importantly, how they can be changed again today through a new kind of conversation that creates trust between strangers, new ways of working that avoid boredom and new attitudes to rebellious youth and forsaken old age.
